Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM)

Various studies have indicated that for many large systems or pieces of equipment, Maintenance and Operation account for as much as 45 to 60% of their overall Life Cycle Costs, and some times much more. Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) is a Process used to determine the maintenance requirement of any physical asset in its operating context.
Objectives of RCM
Maintenance strategy optimization
Extension of equipment life span
Elimination of Chronic machine problem
Root Cause Analysis
No preventive maintenance tasks to be performed – unless it can be justified
RCM is well used in conjunction with the maintainability tools like FMEA (Failure Mode Effect Analysis), (FTA) Fault Tree Analysis and FMECA (Failure Mode Effect Criticality Analysis).
What RCM achieves
Greater safety and environmental integrity
Improved operation performance (output, product quality, customer service)
Greater Maintenance cost effectiveness
Longer useful life of expensive items
A comprehensive database
